Aradale Lunatic Asylum

That's what it used to be called in the olden days.
Then it was the Aradale Mental Hospital.
It operated for around 130 years, closing in 1997.
Now it is home to the Australian College of Wine.
It's a strange kinda place.

  2. Wow, it's a beautiful place (looking at the panorama view), but you've captured its sinister past in this wonderful shot.

    Brrrrrrrrrrr......

  3. As far as I can see it seems to be a nice building. but the way you photographed it (and post-processed) makes it look sinister and full of secrets. Wonderful interpretation.

  4. I agree, it spooked me as soon as I opened the photo. And then when you said it was a mental asylum, I got a little freaked out!

  6. Love the image ... puts me in mind of Manderley. I expect to see Mrs Danvers at any moment.

  7. Jayne - mmmm...makes you wonder about the tortured souls that lived there.

  8. Jelly - I'm not sure, but that bit in the foreground is part of the Aradale Golf Course - i don't think the mental patients use to get out there and play a few holes - I presume the golf club acquired the grounds from the Hospital.

    That's REAL spooky.

  11. Ruth - mmmm... you can read the records of the inmates/patients at the State Archives. People lived their whole lives there - that's all they knew.

  12. Kris - yeah - interesting is the word.
The complex is huge and the buildings beautiful - it just feels weird that people are learning how to grow grapes there now.

  16. Letty! You're here! I'm so glad to see you.

I heard about the fires and it made me think of you, so I came poking around.

This is the prettiest nut-house ever.
